2012 COMPERE
Compere John Bolton-Wood AM
A celebrated performer and the winner of five Green Room Awards, John Bolton-Wood, who was awarded an AM for his services to Opera in 2009, was born in Sydney, and received his music education at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and the London Opera Centre. He made his UK debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Bosun in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd.
John returned to Australia in 1973 to sing the role of Roderick Usher in Larry Sitzky's Fall of the House of Usher, the first full-scale production to be staged in the Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House. Since then he has appeared with all the State Opera companies and with Opera Australia in a wide variety of roles.
In 2011 John’s engagements included the roles of Benoit and Baron Zeta in Opera Australia’s new production of La bohème and The Merry Widow respectively and Sacristan in Tosca for Opera Queensland.
2012 engagements include the role of Dottore Grenville in La Traviata the inaugural Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production and Baron Zeta in The Merry Widow, both for Opera Australia.

Accompanist David Harper
Born and raised in New Zealand but based in the UK for the last forty years, David has earned a glowing reputation worldwide for his accompanying and vocal coaching skills. His clientele includes various distinguished international singers – many of whom also frequently invite him to collaborate in recital at prestigious international venues, as well as students and young aspiring professionals from all points of the globe.
Over the last decade David has often returned to Australasia, establishing a prominent professional profile here to complement his northern hemisphere activities. Biennial visits enable him to fulfil a variety of commitments including intermittent guest coaching periods with Opera Australia, tutorships at Summer Singing Schools, song recital engagements, and regular private vocal coaching stints in numerous locations.
David is proud to maintain his longstanding association with the IFAC Australian Singing Competition as accompanist and prize donor.
